I sit in the rain

It’s a decidedly

Rare occurrence

To have

Rain

Here,

In SoCal,

In summer,

Or any time

Of year

Lately.

The plump

Drops

Of rain

Splatter

Onto the sidewalks,

Grey and dry,

Darkened and wet now.

The air

Is filled

With the humid

Scent

Of wet

Asphalt

And oily grime.

Normally

A spotless

Blue sky,

Replaced with dark

Grey,

And ominous

Clouds,

Cries

Briefly

On the thirsty

World

Of tanlines

And sunglasses,

As tourists

Scramble

For shelter

And patio dining

Umbrellas

Spring into action

For the first time.

Like a fool,

Because I am,

I sit in the rain

With my coffee

To allow my dry soul

A chance

To enjoy

The puddles

That will evaporate

In tomorrow’s

Sun

Once more.

Watching

Watching,

As the gay men

Stagger

Down the street

From the nearby bars,

Fumbling

For keys,

And each other

In the dark.

Laughter

Comes

Seemingly

From all directions,

As small groups

Of young women

Swerve

Along the sidewalk,

To the houses

And apartments

Behind me,

Appearing

From the dark

Arm in arm,

And wobbling

On unrealistic shoes,

With unrealistic

Dreams.

The smoke

From my cigar

Rises above

My weary head,

Evaporating

Into the darkness

Of the night-

Escaping the darkness

Of my mind

And my thoughts.

Hangovers

And fuzzy

Memories

Await them all

Tomorrow morning.

Alone with my beer and cigar,

I watch,

Unnoticed

And uncaring-

Detached

For now.

The morning brings no joy

The sad shuffling of feet-

Him a few feet ahead,

Her a few sad feet behind-

Head low,

Shoulders down,

Trying

Not to let go

Of him

And a broken “them”.

A snapshot

Of the moment,

From my window,

Without a clue

Who said what,

Who let go first,

Who is

Unforgiven.

One sad face

And one set

Of angry eyes,

But who

Hurt who?

At slightly after

1:00AM,

The morning

Brings no joy,

And the emotional hangover

May hurt more

Than the actual hangover

In a few more hours.
