Unaware

Your nose

Was pressed against my neck,

As you exhaled

Your warm breath

On my skin.

Your breasts

Touching my ribs,

One arm

Across my chest,

Your legs

Entwined

Around my torso,

And the fingers

Of one of my hands

In the tangles

Of your hair,

While the other hand

Rested

On the curves

Of your waist and hips,

Searching

And learning

Your body

More.

You slept

Like the most beautiful,

Hibernating,

Tiny bear,

Completely unaware

That I was staring

Wide-eyed at the ceiling,

Listening

To your breathing,

Committing your smell to memory,

As my fingers

Created a map

Of your body

In my brain,

With the taste of you

Still on my lips.

You slept,

Like you would again,

Many times,

Unaware

Of the smile

That held back the tears.

When

How long ago

Was it,

Exactly,

When you

Stopped

Feeling

Like trying?

When

Did it become

Acceptable

To be

Unfeeling

And distant?

When did

Two beds

Become

Better

Than one?

When

Did the space

Between us

Begin to feel

Better

Than

The feel

Of our bodies

Touching,

Wrapped around each other,

And breathless?

Just so you know,

That never happened

For me-

I still ache

For what you

Abandoned

Long ago.

The memories

Are

Less sweet

Now,

And more painful,

Which seems the worst

Betrayal of them-

The worst betrayal

Of us.

Borrowed Time

We are all

On borrowed time-

Each breath

Is a gift

And a theft

From somebody

Else.

You

Exhale

As I

Inhale-

It’s a shared breath

Until

One of us stops.

All we have

Is

Fleeting

And shared,

Or borrowed,

Or stolen-

As in Physics,

Matter is

Neither

Created

Nor destroyed.

We are

Neither

Created nor destroyed,

We are

Shared atoms

In a swirling cosmos

Of light

And dust,

And love,

And heartbreak.

We are neither

Created

Nor destroyed,

We are one

Made of many

Pieces-

Fitting imperfectly,

With many jagged edges,

Smoothed

By the tumbling

Of time and emotion.
