The world beyond my fingertips

The world

Beyond

My fingertips

No longer matters

When she is

In my grasp.

Birds sing still,

I’m sure,

But I don’t

Hear them

Or care,

When her breath

Is in my ears

And on my neck.

The sky

Is still blue,

And the sun

Still shines,

But my eyes

Can only see

Her

When we are

Together,

Embracing.

When she is gone

The world

Still doesn’t matter,

Birds still sing,

The sun still shines,

And the sky

Is still blue,

But I don’t care

Because I am not

Sharing it all

With her.

I sit in the rain

It’s a decidedly

Rare occurrence

To have

Rain

Here,

In SoCal,

In summer,

Or any time

Of year

Lately.

The plump

Drops

Of rain

Splatter

Onto the sidewalks,

Grey and dry,

Darkened and wet now.

The air

Is filled

With the humid

Scent

Of wet

Asphalt

And oily grime.

Normally

A spotless

Blue sky,

Replaced with dark

Grey,

And ominous

Clouds,

Cries

Briefly

On the thirsty

World

Of tanlines

And sunglasses,

As tourists

Scramble

For shelter

And patio dining

Umbrellas

Spring into action

For the first time.

Like a fool,

Because I am,

I sit in the rain

With my coffee

To allow my dry soul

A chance

To enjoy

The puddles

That will evaporate

In tomorrow’s

Sun

Once more.
