Hotel lobby- Tokyo

Sitting

In a hotel lobby

Watching

Daily life in Japan

Unfold

In an orchestrated ballet

Of ritual and tradition

That I do not understand

From my distance

Of unfamiliarity.

All of the nods and bows,

And obedience

To rank and position

Seem somehow detached

From modern reality

That is such

A part of

The current Japan

So known

For the latest technologies

And lust

Of fashion.

And still,

Somehow,

The ancient dance

Continues-

Obedient to history

Until the end.
